Long Descriptions of images in Guides

Fact Checking AI

  • Stop:
    • Process your emotional response to the ad, image, or video that you have encountered. Remember: just as with other media, AI generated media intentionally invokes deep feelings to gain more views.
    • Signs of AI manipulation:
      • Inconsistent lighting, shadows, and reflections
      • Duplicated or extra body parts
      • Either the line of sight or eye position is inconsistent with the rest of the photo
      • Blurry backgrounds or pixelation
  • Investigate:
    • Investigate the surrounding context of the information source being distributed.
    • Check for the following:
      • AI Acknowledgement Statement published along with the image or video
      • Transparency related to the role of AI processing in data, or related to the inputs used to generate particular types of output, as well as the
      • Reputation of the source publishing the AI image. This can be found with a quick Wikipedia search into the publication itself.
    • You can find AI Transparency statements in reputable publishers such as the New York Times and Reuters. Look in the "About" section of the publication or run a Google search of the title of the source and "AI policy" to quickly identify if the source has a published stance on AI transparency and allowed usage. 
  • Find:
    • Compare and cross reference AI generate outputs against known and human verified sources. 
    • Focus on the following:
      • Verify the accuracy of the information or claim made by the AI summarization or prompt response. 
      • Identify areas of "vague" or generalized response and use external content from verified sources to strengthen the AI response.
      • Use hallucinated sources generated within the AI response as a targeted direction for searching out verifiable sources.
  • Trace:
    • Try to identify origins of inputs that may have been used to generate the image or writing.
    • Focus on the following:
      • Unique stylistic elements that may have been remixed in the AI's output response to the prompt.
      • Reverse Image Search: In Google Images you can click on the camera icon or upload the photo and Google will run a search to identify similar images posted across the web. Additionally, you can upload directly into a system like Copyseeker, TinEye, or Lenso.AI
