Manage & Share Research Data

Tips & tools to help student researchers manage research data & information with less stress

Tips for storing

Remember the 3-2-1 Rule for keeping your data safe

  • Keep 3 copies of any important file (1 primary, 2 backup copies)
  • Store files on at least 2 different media types (e.g., 1 copy on a hard drive and a second on different type of drive or media; secure cloud storage services use different types of hard drives than your desktop or laptop)
  • Keep at least 1 copy offsite (i.e., not at your home or on campus, so Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive or Teams)

A simple strategy for your time at IU Indianapolis is to keep a primary copy on a local desktop/laptop, another copy in an IU cloud storage option like Google Drive or MS OneDrive or Teams, and put a third copy in the Scholarly Data Archive (SDA). Talk to your faculty advisor or supervisor about archiving data to the SDA - they may already have a group or departmental account you should use.

Important Note: If you are working with restricted or critical data, you will need to take extra precautions in storing and handling your data. Talk to your faculty advisor, contact SecureMyResearch, and check out the Critical Data Guide.
