For more than fifty years, authors, editors, and publishers in the scientific community have turned to Scientific Style and Format for authoritative recommendations on all matters of writing style and citation. Developed by the Council of Science Editors (CSE), the leading professional association in science publishing, this indispensable guide encompasses all areas of the sciences. CSE (Council of Science Editors) is used primarily by the sciences. CSE has three citation systems to choose from:
1) citation–sequence;
2) citation-name; and
3) name-year.
In citation–sequence, the end references are listed in the sequence in which they first appear within the text. In citation–name, the end references are listed alphabetically by author. In name-year, in-text references contain author and year (for example, Jones 1998). End references appear in alphabetical order by author and year of publication, with multiple works by the same author listed chronologically.
