When planning your research project, it is important to consider how data are governed at IUSM and how that affects your ability to handle (in particular, store) the data you work with for research.
To assist faculty, staff, and students with navigating this process, Indiana University (IU) has appointed Data Stewards to provide guidance. These stewards are assigned to different data subject areas and can also provide insight into the different types of data that IU recognizes and how those classifications might overlap with a particular data subject area.
The IU Data Storage Finder is a tool that can help you plan how to store your data while you are creating and accessing it during the course of your research project period. It asks a questions about your data, and filters the available IU storage options for where your data can be stored based on your answers. Please note that this tool is not designed to point toward solutions for sharing the data needed to validate your findings and satisfy funder requirements.
The IU Data Sharing and Handling tool is designed to centralize storage options for all kinds of IU data. It can be used to make research data storage decisions given qualifiers. It includes details about data storage platform parameters, best practices for handling your research data, and links to relevant IU policies. Please note that this tool is not designed to point towards solutions for the data needed to validate your findings and satisfy funder requirements.
IUSM has a variety of storage platforms available for research data. The amount of data, the approximate length of time the data needs to be stored, access needs, and data security needs (as defined by the funder and/or IU's data classification level) are factors in determining the best storage option for your data.
REDCap is a secure, web-based platform that supports data collection and data management for research, operations support, and quality improvement projects. This tool is free and access is provided by the Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), UITS Advanced Biomedical IT Core, and IUSM Department of Biostatistics.
