Research Impact Challenge for authors

Information and activities for the Research Impact Challenge author pathway

What is Google Scholar?

Google Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine that indexes the full text or metadata of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines. Researchers can create profiles in Google Scholar to claim their publications and enhance search results for their name.

Why create a Google Scholar profile?

  • Google Scholar provides a simple way to link searchers to your publications.
  • Google Scholar automatically tracks citations to your work and makes those links publicly visible.
  • Maintaining your profile is easy.
  • Google Scholar is free to use as an author and searcher.
  • Google Scholar indexes the broadest range of grey literature, reports, presentations, posters, and other works shared outside of proprietary databases.

How to use your Google Scholar profile

  • Keep your Google Scholar profile current and accurate
  • Link to free, open access versions of your works whenever possible (use IUI Scholarworks, it’s easy!)
  • Link to a profile, such as your Google Scholar or ORCID profile, in your email signature, CV, presentations and posters, and (if possible) from your departmental web page.

Challenge Activity

  • If you do not already have a Google Scholar Profile, create one at https://scholar.google.com. Be sure to sign in with the Google account you want associated with your profile.
    • For graduate students
      • Use a personal email address rather than your IU account. You may want to create an email account specifically for your professional activities and to connect your accounts in Google Scholar, ORCID, etc.
      • If you do not already have a publication in Google Scholar, consider uploading a research poster, presentation, or paper to ScholarWorks. This will be discoverable by Google Scholar and allow you to create a public profile.
  • Make sure your profile is public so that your profile is highlighted when people search for your name

  • Allow Google Scholar to automatically update your profile with new publications (click on the plus icon, then select "Configure article updates").
