Finding aid for the Flynn Collection as well as subject information for the Native American & Indigenous Studies program at IUPUI.

Biographical / Historical

The Johnny Flynn Memorial Library was founded in 2012 by Charmayne “Charli” Champion-Shaw to honor the founding director of American Indian Programs at IUPUI, Dr. Johnny Flynn. Flynn, a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma, served as an IUPUI lecturer in Religion from 2004 to 2008 when he was appointed assistant professor and founding director of Indian Programs. Under Flynn’s leadership, IUPUI developed a relationship with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, the only federally-recognized tribe in Indiana. Dr. Flynn was awarded the Joseph T. Taylor Excellence in Diversity Award posthumously in recognition of his contributions to diversity at IUPUI.

The Johnny Flynn Memorial Library resided in the American Indian Studies Program Office from 2012-2022 when it was transferred to the University Libraries under a long-term stewardship agreement between the Library and the Native American and Indigenous Studies Program in the School of Liberal Arts.

Scope and Contents

The collection comprises scholarly monographs, memoirs, novels, and other written materials that are concerned with Native American and Indigenous history and life both in the North America and around the globe. Materials are drawn from Dr. Flynn’s personal collection, materials taught in Native American and Indigenous Studies courses at IU Indianapolis, and materials written by tribally-enrolled or culturally-connected Native authors. These materials are useful for those seeking historical and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples. They are arranged alphabetically.
