Learn about Virtual and Augmented Reality, and services available at the Nexus Collaborative Learning Lab!

Circulation Service

4 Google Cardboard devices are available for circulation to students, staff, faculty, and residents at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). If you are at the Indianapolis campus, you may request the Google Cardboard at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library circulation desk.

Policies:

  • One month (30 days) checkout, non-renewable.
  • Late fee $1/day.
  • If the Google Cardboard is not returned (lost/stolen) or returned damaged, the borrower will be charged $15.00 to cover replacement costs. Please return the damaged device to the library if possible, so that it can be sent to Google's Recycling Program.

Safety and Precautions

  • Handle the device gently as it is made of cardboard and can tear if too much force is applied.
  • If you are new to VR, start by taking a break after a 10-15 minute immersive experience. For those more experienced, it is recommended that you take at least a 10-15 minute break every 30 minutes. Discontinue use if you experience nausea, headaches, eye strain, disorientation, or general discomfort despite following these steps.
  • Cardboard is not for use by children without adult supervision.
  • Do not use Cardboard while driving, walking, or otherwise by being distracted from real world situations that prevent you from obeying traffic or safety laws. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery immediately after using Cardboard if you feel impaired or disoriented.
  • If you have had or could be prone to seizures, consult a doctor before using Cardboard.

How To

*NOTE: Handle the device gently as it is made of cardboard and can tear if too much force is applied.

  1. Open the top flap that is velcroed to reveal 2 flaps underneath it.
  2. Open the 2 flaps by pushing them to either side to reveal 1 large flap.
  3. Pull that large flap upwards and over the cardboard box that houses the lenses.
  4. Velcro the sides down.
  5. Download and open a VR app on your smartphone, and place it in the top flap that was opened in step 1. If the app you choose is Cardboard, open it and pair it with the Cardboard device by scanning the QR code at the bottom of the device before placing it in the top flap.
  6. Velcro that flap shut to hold your smartphone in place, and raise the Cardboard to your eyes to enjoy the experience!

VR Apps for your Smartphone

Check out a Google Cardboard from the library and immerse yourself in VR with these apps! These are just a starting point - newer apps are constantly being launched.

Please note that these apps are only compatible with smartphones that fulfill certain operating system requirements, and contain an accelerometer and a gyroscope.
