Open Access Week Challenge 2024

This 5-day asynchronous online workshop will guide you through tools and resources that we recommend for a community-first, open approach to knowledge sharing.

Welcome to Day 1 of the Open Access Challenge!

Welcome to Day 1 of the Open Access Week Challenge!

Today's activity will focus on how to manage your scholarly identify using Open Research & Contributor Identifier (ORCID).

In this part of the Open Access Week Challenge, you should expect to learn the following:

  • What is ORCID orcid logo
  • How to create or update your ORCID record
  • Ways you can get the most out of having an ORCID

Towards the end of this page you will find Day 1's challenge activity that will need to be completed before you moved on to Day 2: Zotero.

Day 1: Managing your scholarly identity with ORCID

What is ORCID?

ORCID is a persistent identifier that is associated with authors and contributors (here's an example ORCID record: https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5455-1471).

Having an ORCID can:

  • Distinguish you from all other researchers, especially those with similar names;
  • Provide name disambiguation if you have changed your name at any point or go by slightly different names in publications (J Smith, Jay Smith, Jay D Smith, JD Smith, etc.);
  • Stay with you as move from one employer to another;
  • Track your scholarly output.

ORCID is free of charge and anyone can register. Increasingly ORCID is becoming required by funders and publishers, so the sooner you create your own ORCID, the better!

ORCID and "Community over Commercialization"

ORCID is a global, not-for-profit organization that is sustained by a growing list of member organizations (IU Bloomington and IU Indianapolis are members!). As a part of a more broad digital infrastructure to support researchers and the sharing of knowledge with a global audience, ORCID strives to be an open, trusted, and inclusive organization. Which means that it remains open, transparent, and non-proprietary.

As a researcher or contributor, when you sign up for an ORCID iD you can expect the following:

Registering for an ORCID iD

  1. Navigate to https://orcid.org/register to create your ORCID iD

Tips when creating an ORCID iD:

  • Tip #1: When creating your ORCID iD we recommend that you add at least one additional email address to your account so you never lose access to your ORCID. If you do lose access or can't remember the email address or password you used to register for an ORCID iD, you can submit a support request to try to regain access.

  • Tip #2: You have control over your ORCID record but remember that ORCID only works for you if you make this data available for others to see. When selecting your visibility settings for your ORCID record, we highly recommend setting your default visibility to Everyone. This ensures that people can view your ORCID and see your research activities, affiliations, awards, other variations of your name, and more! Read more information about ORCID's visibility settings.

Using your ORCID iD

After you register for an ORCID iD, it's now time to start using it!

Below are some resources to get you started on filling out the different sections of your ORCID record:
